Diamond commercial grades?

Anyone know anything about this? I was looking at a ring which had stones which were top grade commercial. However, they are not certified. Can anyone tell me what top grade commercial means? I have indications it might mean a color G/H and clarity VS1/VS2... is this right?

means they can claim anything - Top Grade Commercial... their own shop talk that can mean anything...

stones which are top grades are sent to be graded - as they make the stones easier to sell. I would worry that without an independant check - that the stone was low in colour ie down around I or below... and SI1 and below.

obviously this is just conjector without seeing the stone.

may i recommend you have a read of the diamond info on http://www.pricescope.com <-- an independant diamond consumer advice website and the indepth info at http://www.goodoldgold.com <-- while GOG is a shop, Johnathon who runs the shop is a diamond nut who gives alot of impartical advice.

If it is a ring and stone you like - it might be worth taking it to a independant diamond appraiser who can look over the stone for you and give you his/her assement of the diamonds grading & that the diamond weights what the shop said it weights.

if you do go down this route - make sure you get it in writing that you can get a full refund if you decide you dont want the stone.

I did put up some info on the 4Cs in a thread on here.. might be worth a search

Thanks guys. I know all about the 4C's. However the jeweller I typically use is a wholesale jeweller and most of their stones are not certified. The info they gave was basically that they are top grade commercial and that probably meant they were G/H and VS2 ish. Some of their stones were certified, but most not and the cost of certification is liable to add significantly to the cost....

Up to £3k and that would get me up to 1.5 carats of a trilogy in white gold. If I go through an online retailer with more precise info on the diamonds, a similar size with H/VS2 will be up towards 3.5k.

  • ok...

    may i make a suggestion?
    how about these three:
    Diamond 1 0.464 ct G VS2
    Diamond 2 0.465 ct G VS2
    Diamond 3 0.471 ct G VS2

    D2
    DI40X_AGS-7414601.jpg
    D3

they will cost together $3552 which is £1913 and would be £2240 after import tax.

    or maybe:

    ACA 2
    DI40X_AGS-7712608.jpg

    ACA 3

Those three would be $5199 or £2800 (£3276 after tax) and are among the best diamonds in the world.

I have one of whiteflashes ACA diamonds - apsolute stunner of a diamond
please consider looking around, as there are alot of options out there, and buying in america you can save alot of money as their diamond are cheaper than they are here.

A friend of mine bought from america just recently - he was shown several diamonds in the UK the comparable UK stone was a 0.91ct E VVS2 - which including a 4 prong platinum ring was £5000

the stone he has bought for his fiancee in waiting is here a 0.924 D VS1 for $6579 (£3544 and £4146 after tax) and the same ring adds £200

there are lots of other option, have a good look around, theres more to the 4Cs than first meet the eye... and i must stress the Cut (as in the proportions of the diamond) is the most important to getting a good diamond that can sparkle like a disco ball

Thanks for the info. You have opened my eyes to building the ring myself and it looks like this is a great way to go. I have got together a ring with F/G VS2 0.48/0.58/0.48 which looks like about £2900 delivered (all certified).

  • thats good to hear :)

where are you sourcing the diamonds from? F/G VS2 sound like a great combo colour and clarity wise as there'll be no visual difference between an F and G.

tho the Certs are they from GIA? AGS? IGI? do they give any info about the cut: ie the angles of the crown and pavilion? depth of the diamond? these can help predict how sparkly a diamond can be if buying on the net.

Sorry - i can be real nutty about diamond... i tend to bore people stupid talking about em.

And at the end of the day i'm sure they'll be lovely.

The certs are a combo of GIA and AGS. I have all the info on the cut but that means relatively little to me! What I am taking as a guide is the grading on polish and symmetry which are EX for the GIA certs and ideal for the AGS. As far as match goes, the only things I can really see which are not identical are the girdle and the fluorescence (one ranging between faint/negligible/faint blue). Sound ok?
