Hi lissaannet, yes everyone who works will get a nil tax code.

  • I don't think I did, but I believe it was purely down to fortunate timing (went bankrupt towards the end of March, close to the end of the financial year, hence no time to put one in place).
  • Thanks for you quick reply, feel a bit better having read this thread :)

do not really want this flagging me up in the work office,

There are many reasons for receiving a NT code....BR only being one of them.

I would be surprised if anyone in the 'work office' would realise the possibilities with an NT code....if they do...how come, etc??

An employees tax code is privileged information anyway...and anyone in a payroll department who starts passing comments of such a confidential nature really needs to feel the full force of company discipline brought against them.

Have no concerns in this department.....

I didn't get a NT code, and I went BR at the start of Feb

  • it really does depend when the tax office imposes the nil code as to whether you will end up with your payroll being notified - from reading other threads it can take months!

i went BR on 15th Sept, OR has told me i'll be getting a nil tax code, but certainly up til now, my payroll office hasn't been informed of it.

I got called to the payroll office and I think that the person could have been a bit more discreet but she just asked me if the letter she had received was correct. I said yes and hurried on out of the office!

She shouldn't have done that. I used to do payroll and the reasons for tax codes are between the individual and HMRC - payroll just process the pay on the code they are issued with.
  • Ive had a letter from the tax office to say my code is changing to nt. It does not say why so im hopeing that my work is not told why either.

Your employer will get an abbreviated version of what was in the letter to you. From memory it's employees name, NI Number & Tax Code. There can be a few more bits such as payroll number/department and previous employment pay and tax (if applicable), but that's about it.
