But do you have the maps stored on the 'phone or do you download them as you're moving?

Incidentally, an on-line PC-Pro article on SatNavs and free apps.

On my Iphone4 and my wife's Nokia N8 the maps are installed on the phone. I have a 1Gb allowance per month and in the 3 months I've owned the phone I am nowhere near that much in total for the 3 months so it really is nothing to worry about.

Map updates are free and regular. However, the TomTom One I have is completely out of date and needs updating - which is at a significant cost.

Seriously the Sat Navs on the smartphones are great.
  • Thanks everyone for all your helpful advice. It seems there are a lot of options, so no wonder I was confused.
Will have to get out to Halfords to play with some TomToms, I think. The true test will be if it can find my house as delivery vans often fail to get the driver follows SatNav directions.

The mobile 'phone route is interesting, but I think buying a dedicated SatNav might work out cheaper for me. At least I'll know where I am with a one-off payment - although I do need to factor in updates to maps at some point I suppose.

Extra thanks to momoyama for your pic of Indiana Jones, which cheered me up no end!

Thanks again. Great to have your help.

Nokia OVI maps free on all GPS nokia phones. Got good reviews on the gadget show recently.

You can download the maps for offline use. No data connection needed when on the move.

Personally between the satnav choices i prefer garmin over tomtom on the mapping & routing side.
    Tomtom have more gimmicks.

........ Halford recommended Garmin as the better product .............
On the instructions of their head office as they had to sell more garmins than other brands and were bonused on garmin sales

I bought a cheapo navigo to replace my old garmin i3. Case is identical to the garmin products.

But does not use the same software, Well it does now but it was not meant to.
