How to save more than 50% on National Express

Let's say you're travelling from Portsmouth to Cambridge. This requires a stop in London Victoria coach station.
If you book this as a single journey, it costs £23. If you book it as two journeys (Portsmouth-London London-Cambridge) it costs £10 in total.
I only found this out because before the site revamp, National Express forced anyone taking this route to go via London Heathrow whereas I knew that via Victoria was much more direct and quicker so I've always booked it as two legs. Just out of curiosity I tried it both ways this time and came up with this frankly unbelievable difference in cost!
I suggest that if your journey involves a change of coach, check out the cost of doing it in two journeys, you might be surprised!

There is a lot of competition on the Portsmouth to London route.
For that part you might also consider Megatrain and Greyhound Coaches.
Southern Trains can also be cheap from Portsmouth to London.
From £3.75 each way.0
