I went yesterday to my local Branch, to withdraw £9.37 over the Counter, the Woman behind the Counter said, "We've noticed that you are withdrawing small amounts on a regular basis, would you consider talking to one of our Advisor's to see if we can upgrade your Account?" I agreed, replying, with "Yeh why not, but it wont go through, I've got Bad credit.."
Anyhow, an Assistant approached me, spoke briefly about what she would do for me, and Offered me a cup of Coffee, after about 20 Mins, I was called into the Assistant Branch Manger, he went through a Long drawn out application, Highlighting all the Offers, and on my agreement, to apply, he sent the Request, I Got Accepted....!!!??? I was Surprised.
I'd just like to point out here that, I'm 42, An Adult Student, Receiving Income Support, The Account came with a Lot of bells and Whistles, Phone Protection, Holiday Insurance Car Recovery Insurance, Etc Etc. The Outcome from this was that once I had agreed to the new Bank Account, I would have to Pay Natwest, £12.97 per month, I don't have a Car, I can't afford Holidays, my phone is worth £20 at most which I cant afford to top up, I can barely afford to Eat properly and Pay my Bills, But with this new Account, I can pay an extra £12.97 to Natwest, who will not even give me an overdraft! for no reward whatsoever, I'm mearly posting this in the hope that others will Not be tempted to Upgrade their Account. (I apologise, but I cannot remember the name of the Account) But if A Student, With Very Bad Credit can get one of these accounts, and not reap any rewards, but be left £12.97 a month WORSE off. I think That's Wrong.

It's the Advantage Gold account. If you don't need any of the features why did you sign up for it? You can call them and ask then to downgrade it to a Current Plus account
Debt free and staying that way!

You should have exercised your right to say "NO" :D

If the advisor held a gun to your head to make you have the acccount I would make a serious complaint.

To downgrade they would need to visit a branch or put it in writing my understanding is they wont do it over the telephone.

Bank charges are fair, the fact that it costs the bank £1 when a DD fails does not mean that they should not charge you £35. There is total transparency, you know beforehand what the charges are. If your argument is to have any consistency then McDonald's for instance should not for example be allowed to charge £1 for a burger which costs 5p to make. We live in a world of disproportionate costs and charges.

Furthermore if you go overdrawn without permission you are basically borrowing money without asking. How would you feel if someone borrowed your money without your consent? Moreover with the advent of internet and telephone banking it has never been easier to keep track of your money and be aware when your account is nearly empty.

    You do talk rubbish !

Rang Barclays this morning and told "you don't have to make an appoinment to open a basic card account". So, as we were short of time we nipped off in a taxi to our nearest branch. On arrival we were told " you need an appointment" !
We were then informed "we don't just do a basic card account, we give you a full financial assessment which includes quotes for all your insurances and financial products. We also open you a savings account to run along side it."
We told them to stick it and left.
Barclays join the list of lying banks and I'm £13 poorer in taxi fares.:mad::mad:

  • Apply for the Barclays Bank Account online - If you don't meet the criteria or pass the credit check as long as your ID can be checked electronically via the electoral register your rejection letter will say that you can apply for the Cash Card Account.

All you have to do is sign the Signature Specimen form included and pop it back in the post, give it two weeks and your Visa Debit Connect card and PIN arrive on your doormat.

£1 of debt is too much for me!

If it helps you I can advise the Coop Debit card does not work on pay machines on petrol pumps. As far as I am led to believe no debit card does. This is because the machines on pumps are not real time configured unlike most POS swipe machines which check your account in real time on the spot.

Lloyds, Nationwide, Santander and HSBC's online cards work.

I'd complain, it's not the bank lying to you, so much as the staff member.
