Disagree I'm afraid kids will learn through life how to deal with money
Why do some 'kids' at 20 have £50K debt while other have £10K saved then?
and the parents sticking cash in a bank IMHO is not really teaching the kids how to be prudent with money.
It doesn't teach how to make money, but it does teach how to manage it.

Take that view to the extreme and you can say kids don't need any education because they will learn "through life". Not teaching your kid about finances and money management is a crime. If you are unable to teach your kids about it because you haven't got a clue yourself, it's damned stupid to have the kids in the first instance.

You should grant parents a little bit more intelligence. Of course it's not done by sticking the money into a bank account and never discuss money matters with the kid!

Just moved mine and my partners accounts to Barclays. also can review Nationwide (see below)

I can confirm it took just over an hour to review us. It wasn't a full financial review as such. It was an interesting scenario where we were asked more about our lifestyle - what we did, if we planned any large expenses in future years, how many cars we owned, if we owned our house etc.

This was then noted to 'enable them to assist us better and understand our financial priorities'

We have another appointment next week to go in with everything sent to us this week. They are going to go through registering online/phone/pingit/text/everything, which can be helpful. Also will go through the self service elements within the bank to 'reduce queue times we may incur'

The best thing is that there is an account relationship manager looking after us. The time we have put in means there is a human being (not a voice operated service) that knows a bit about us.
This is a positive to me and I hope that it means over time that we get treated well.

We had the choice of a debit card (i.e. Visa Debit) or a pure cash card. Nice touch is that you can have a personal photo on your bank card too.

Moving to them as partner got into some trouble with current bank and Barclay charges are low (in case of future issues).

I actually have a Nationwide Flexaccount too. These are fine. I have had this account for nearly 20 years and it has always been there in the background :-)

Oh... we are both moving from Santander. Overcharging, and no thoughts if someone is genuinely in financial hardship.
I haven't been happy for years there. Hope barclays is better - their range of services provided seem to be.

    Simple really!

Go to coventry building society, you can open one online with them. quick and straightforward

Or you could try Yorkshire or derbyshire building society, or any other building society who will open you an account there and then

Just to let everyone know, this Coventry account is a basic cashcard only and NOT a VISA DEBIT
Means you can't use it online or to pay bills I think?
  • I wonder if someone could do a summary of what banks give what sort of cards.

    I will start it off.

Barclays- Visa debit card (must be easy to pass credit check as I did)
Coventry-Basic Cashcard (lots of paperwork back & forth)

I have a debit card on mine.

  • You have the Coventry first current account then, which requires a credit check etc
  • As it's a basic bank account thread, I presume that means NO credit checks or overdraft.

    So the question should be-
What banks allow a basic bank account with a visa debit card?

  • Well I don't understand then.
How have you got a debit card when I only get a cashcard.
When I phoned the Bank they said only first account holders get the debit card.
You must have fallen through the net.

    Think I might tell!
    Especially after your snide remark.
