I am just in the process of opening a basic bank account with Natwest. So far the process has been OK, although its a little slow. I filled in the application online, the paperwork then gets sent out (it arrived within a couple of days) to be signed and returned with proof of ID., I have now sent it back and just hoping its being accepted. Would liked to have been able to open an account instantly so I can get things sorted!#1453 sealed pot Challenge No 5:cool2: keeping all those 20p's!

Well now 4 months since opened my Coop bank account, and can say truly happy with them.:j
It was a bit of a faff to set up the account cos it took them ages to send the documents, and then they managed to set up DH's internet banking and not mine, but once we got THAT sorted, I can say I am truly happy.
I can put money in the post Office, which means that I don't need to go near a branch, have net banking and can keep an eye on my money 24/7.Uk call centres.
And I know what is in there is MINE and no overdrafts.:beer:Debts :Paypal £1981.32

HSBC £5471.01 0% until Feb 2025

Just called the Co-op for a cashminder account and was accepted instantly
so unbelievably happy as i have been paying my wages into a savings account to avoid being charged and paying all bills in cash but now I feel like I am back in the modern world. I did apply a few years ago and was rejected but I think this was because of me not being on the electoral roll. I can now save a bit of money having all my bills on direct debit and also save myself some time. Just need to pop to branch with ID and they will send out my details. Does anyone know how long they take to do this ?

Hi All
I applied for a Natwest Basic Bank Account online, the paperwork arrived in the post for signature and I had to send proof of ID.
All pretty painless and efficient.#1453 sealed pot Challenge No 5:cool2: keeping all those 20p's!

I have has a bank account with Natwest for approx 15+ years. Initially i had a joint account with my partner then we split and i opened a basic account (very little income).
Years have gone by, credit has improved (although still needs further improving), i have a regular job (£38000 a year) and paid weekly, not overdrawn. have had a loan for a car that has never defaulted and just recently taken out a contract phone for my daughter...
Current account card stopped working...went into branch to order new one..."would you like to speak with an adviser to upgrade your account"...yeah i thought...just the next account up. Oh no...told me i was eligible for advantage gold...told her no but she persisted that this was the very best for me...all paperwork signed...COMPUTER SAID NO!!!!!!!!!
She could not understand it so she said that she would speak with her manager and sort it out...put gold card in post and gave me the paper work to bring home. 2 hours later..voicemail...unable to give me the account after all but she would request a new card. 3 hours later i got a txt message informing that i had been signed up for the basic account...THAT IS NOT WHAT I SIGNED FOR!!!!!!!!!!!
My partner (who i had the joint account with and got back together with) remains with natwest and has had credit issues...they ring him all of the time to offer upgrades etc...he earns half of me and im blessed with the basic account...
BEWARE...YOU CAN ONLY USE RSB/NATWEST OR ULSTER CASHPOINT WITH THIS ACCOUNT...now i have to travel 3 mile to withdraw money from my bank, can no longer use the local sainsburys.....so no, its not easy....its discriminatory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and quite frankly im at my witts end:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:0 -

Im sorry to hear of your experience however the step account has now been changed to a basic account so they have not opened a basic account for you or have they? The new card may have been sent as all old step account customers had to be sent new bank cards due to the change over.
I would recommend you raise a concern this can be done by viewing the following link:

If you want to appeal your current account application you will need to obtain a copy of your experian and equifax credit report. Should you meet the criteria an underwriter will overturn the decision for you. If you have any adverse data on your credit file they are unlikely to accept you.
I would recommend you apply for a Barclays Basic bank account there quiet good.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
Went with a friend who has poor credit history to help her open a basic bank account at Barclays. After a long interview today they decided that because one of her old debts was on a Barclaycard she could not have an account. This seems to be in direct contrdiction to what Barclays heve told this site in the past. Maybe their policy has changed.0

I have an IVA so my credit rating will be very poor, so I was not looking forward to opening a bank account which I just wanted to use for expenses that are paid to be as part of my job. I already have a current account with Think Banking which deals with all my direct debits etc. I wanted a basic account that I could h my expenses paid into and I could use a debit card on to pay for travelling expenses, hotels etc.
I tried to open a Barclays 'Cash Card' account and was told that as I have already have a current account with another bank, Barclays could not help. So Barclays get no points.
So, following a link from this site I rang the Co-op bank who after doing credit checks and asking all about the account I already have with another bank, allowed me to open a 'Cash Minder' account.
I do not see why they needed to know about my other bank account but as there is nothing untoward about it, it does not seem to have mattered to them that I did have another bank account. Apparently the account will be open and usable in about 2 weeks time. All seems well, the only small gripe is the cost of the telephone call which is a chargeable 084.. number.0
