Best way to receive payment for high value goods on Ebay?

Hi I am selling 3 different collections of vintage toys on Ebay and the price is going sky high. However, one person is the highest bidder on all three auctions. The buyer has 12 feedbacks and only 1 for this year.(All positive)
Having read several threads on this board about how packages have got 'lost' and how Paypal have refused compensation, I would like advice on how to get this 'right' so that I don't lose my money. The total, so far, is just under £200.

The auction ends this evening......

Any advice would be fantastic

You must take paypal so your question is rather null and void i'm afraid. It is a very rare buyer who will pay by any unsafe method for items that expensive.

However, once you get payment as long as it says 'OK to send' on the paypal payment said and you send it with complete online tracking and with a signature viewable online (that bit is important as items will be over £150) you will be fine. Special delivery in the UK will be sufficient, just make sure you keep your silver slip or till reciept for 180 days. My advice though would be different if you are allowing non UK bidders as you then have issues with finding couriers.

Thank you so much for your fast reply. I usually only sell things of low value that we don't want or need any more. Reading some of the horror stories on the forum have made me feel a bit nervous.

What would happen if they offered to pay cash to collect would this be acceptable too/

If they offer cash on collection that would be fine and a very good result.

Mosy of my collectable items tend to go far afield, is your current highest bidder local to you?

I'm not sure if she is local. On her eBay, My World, page it just states UK. I just wanted the info tucked away in my mind... just in case.

Never take the forums as gospel on what happens. Firstly, they are where people with problems come; no-one is going to bother to post "hey I got a good sale" (unless it's on a thread about some of the smaller auction site where that is fairly rare in itself), so most of the threads here are people with problems, which are in the vast minority of people. Secondly, dig a bit deeper and you will see most issues actually turn out all right just by doing the right thing by your buyer.

I agree with Soo though. Special delivery all the way. I would definitely concur - I wouldn't pay out £200+ in cash, I'd nearly always either put it on a card or through Paypal or whatever. Also a lot of people start out on eBay or use it very rarely - low feedback is not in itself the sign of a blatant scammer.

Only nitpicking, but a minority can't be vast.
I would happily pay cash for collectables, if I knew what I was buying. But don't allow collection if someone pays by paypal. To be protected you have to post it tracked.

You want cash ideally so even if they are not local could you deliver, if not I would send by either courier depending on size or by special delivery you need it to be a insured signed for service, with high value goods its not worth taking the risk,
you have the option to ask them to gift it to you on paypal to save fees

Any seller that asks for that will just look like a scammer. OP please do not endanger your account by doing this.

I very rarely use Rm these days , you can get complete online tracking with ups / dhl / city link for about the same cost as special delivery these days ,(£5-7) if you book through an agency like interparcel or parcel monkey , and they collect from your door .Most are delivered next day with complete online tracking .
Rm are crap sent a first class packet last week and it took a Week to get to Edinburgh from Bristol , what sort of service is that !

A universal one andy. Special delivery is equally as good as any courier service. If you think there are no problems with agencies, have a look at the thread on them.
