Lukily the MOT test centre is a 2 min drive from where we are, so dont have to drive too long :) Its all pre booked :)

I think I would have asked them to come and pick it up if it is that close.

I would like to know why you bought a SORN car without MOT, did you get it checked or is it a known vehicle?

I can't really add anything to be honest. Although bear in mind that you can Tax the car online, which will be easier than going to the post office, and thus makes using the car without Tax very limited. You'll need to be insured, but all this will be checked automatically online. I don't think you need a policy number for the insuarnce either, so you shouldn't have to wait for this if it's delayed in the post or something!

It's a very good point Tinks made which stated that the car needs to be insured in its own right, as it's often a misconception that if a driver who can drive any car on their own policy, thenh they can also drive yours, even though said vehicle is not insured. This is not the case, and you'll need a policy too!

Good luck with the course, yoiu'll no doubt pass if it's intensive!

Do not tax the car online. As it is a new tax and not a renewal you will be unable to drive the car until the tax disc arrives in the post which typically takes 5 days.

Beware if someone suggests the other driver can drive it if they have 'Driving other vehicles' on their insurance, this coverage only applies if the vehicle is insured in it's own right.

;)

You sure? A company the size of Aviva doesnt have it in their small print.

Driving other cars:
We will insure you whilst you are driving
any other car within the
territorial limits
providing:
the car does not belong to you or is
not hired to
you under a hire purchase
agreement,
you are driving the car with the owners
express consent,
you still have your car and it has
not been damaged beyond cost
effective repair,
you are aged 25 or above, at inception
or renewal of this policy
your
certificate of motor insurance
indicates that you can drive
such a vehicle.

From what I've heard, the car itself has to have an insurance policy attached to it, although I can't see what part of Section 143 RTA relates to this, can somebody enlighten me please?

Edit: Although it appears a bit ambiguous, 143(a) states that; a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road /SIZE]F1 or other public place[SIZE=4 unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and

I'd imagine that covers it?

Mmm.
A lucky escape with some of the advice above.
You can drive the vehicle without it being insured, providing you have cover on your own policy.
This applies to vehicles not owned by you, so your friend would have been ok.
You can't keep it on the road, but your can drive it back and to to a pre booked MOT.
It's worth having the insurance policy with him, as it'll be flagged on the dvla vehicle tax database, and it won't be on the askmid insurance database.
If it passes, you can keep it off road, then when you pass your test, get insurance with a full licence, and if you get a copy of the policy faxed to you, or emailed (if the post office accept it) get the tax. Insurance is usually a lot cheaper with provisional, then hiked badly when you pass, so it's pays to shop around. As you are getting a free change, that's not bad. You'll need the insurance policy, (faxed copy), the V5, the MOT, and a V10.
Bear in mind if you tax it on Friday, it'll start from the beginning of October, so you'll lose a month, as opposed to starting in November.
If you apply on Saturday, it'll start from November, but then it shouldn't be on the road until then.

Beware of people that tell you the car has to be insured for someone else to drive a car under their driving other cars extension. It is an urban myth that is perpetuated by people on internet forums and people in pubs. The reality is that a very very small minority of Insurers do stipulate that the car has to be insured for it to be covered whilst driving it under the driving other cars extension.

Obviously it is worth checking the Insurance to see if the insurer actually specifically states it has to hold it's own insurance. If it does not stipulate it then it does not have to hold it's own cover.

Appologies if this is a bit of a cliche, but I was watching a Police Interceptors/Traffic Cops/Road Wars etc just the other day (a very recent one) and a gentleman was pulled over with his own insurance policy, but as the car didn't have one itself, said car was seized etc. I appreciate these TV shows can paint a strange picture of reality, but they all seem to paint the same picture regarding this issue.

I see the police making numerous errors on those programs about insurance.

They normally make errors on driving other cars and motor trade policies. Another one of their favourites is that not having an MOT will invalidate the Insurance.

They also make a play that if Mr X uninsured driver hits someone and kills them they will get no money. The reality is they will normally get paid out by the Motor Insurance Bureau (Every motor policy contributes towards it) or in some cases the Motor Insurer of the car has to pay the claim anyway and then try and recover the money from the policyholder and / or driver

I have dealt with numerous queries from them when they ring from the roadside. Some of them will not believe someone is covered due to the Policemans's own lack of knowledge of Insurance. They often struggle on fleet policies due to the lack of a restriction to the drivers.

Motor Insurance is bound by the laws of contract, the Ombudsman's rulings and the Road Traffic Act. If something is specifically in the contract (Policy) then it does not apply. This is why as the vast vast majority of Insurers do not stipulate the other car must be insured to be insured under the driving other cars extension then it does not have to be covered.
