Benefits Help.....

Not sure this is the right forum but here goes......

I work in the Public Sector and will be made redundant on March 31st. We are trying for our first baby and am not sure whether we should put this on hold. When I am made redundant and hopefully will be pregnant by this time, what Benefits if any will I be entitlted to? My Fiance earns £1220 per month after tax etc. He is sef employed - this make a difference? I am so confused and don't want to bring a child into this world if we cannot afford to give it all it needs. Will we be entitled to Housing benefit as we currently privately rent? :(
With nearly 1 million of us out of work by this time the chances of us all being reemployed are slim.....am i just really pessimistic?

  • Try a website called "entitledto" sorry not sure of the correct address or go onto Directgov. You should be able to find the information out on there.

I think you're being realistic and should wait for a while until the benefit situation is clearer

Heya, as far as tax credits is concerned it doesnt make a difference whether your partner is employed or self employed, for self employed income they would take his net profit into account. If you have a baby, looking ahead to the tax year 11/12 based on an estimate of just his yearly net profit £1220 x12 = £14640 you would qualify for wtc and ctc - as long as he works at least 24hpw for the wtc, now this is just loosely speaking, altho cuts are going to be made, anything major isnt gonna happen for a few odd years yet, tax credits will eventually be combined with this universal benefit but like the tories said this wont happen in this goverment and possibly not the next so tax credits is around for a few more years yet. Lots of of people have said that entitledto calculator is often inacurrate so you might wanna try the tax credit calculator on their website www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits
