You can run a Disco or Defender diesel on waste veggie oil. That's 2,500 ltrs of free fuel.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

    Member #1 of £1,000 challenge - £13.74/ £1000 (that's 1.374%)

    3-6 month EF £0/£3600 (that's 0 days worth)

  • If you're wanting this as a day to day car, I would go for the Discovery. That said if it's just going to be a once in a while car, then something like a V8 defender or discovery - no one wants them as they drink the petrol..

Freelander 1's are hit and miss - you might get a good one, but you could need up as best mates with your local garage.

How much are you really going to use the off road ability? The reason I ask is, as abit of a left field suggestion - what about a Subaru Forester?

I wouldn't be putting veg oil in any TD5 or TDCi(Puma) engined landrover. The 300/200TDI and early diesels will run fine though.

If you look at a MK1/2 discovery be very careful to check for rust under the back end. They rot badly there and can be difficult to spot unless on a ramp.
Check bulk heads and chassis especially rear cross member on defenders.

  • If you're buying a LR keep the bonnet cable well oiled, or it will wear out...think about it.;)

Probably the best all rounder if you can find one would be a Landcruiser Colorado, with the 3 litre Diesel before it was common railed.

Don't leave it too long looking for anything decent in this class, many thousands of such vehicles have been exported and good ones are getting scarce....didn't see any Freelanders in the lines waiting for ships at Sheerness, Southampton etc.

I think your top priority must be reliability and so I would always choose a Japanese or Korean 4x4. I've had a Hyundai Terracan which was very good and currently have a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, neither of these vehicles have ever broken down.
A problem shared is a problem multiplied. :o
