Car damaged by supermarket trolley

Options
On Thursday, I visited a supermarket and did some shopping. When I got home, I only realised that my left hand side of my car got hit by a trolley. There is a 16 inch scratch along rear panel (my car is 3 doors) and 3 inches onto the passenger door. There is also a dent about 4 inches long and parts of the scratch, the paint has almost gone

I have got 2 quotes so far and both been around £654 inc vat!

I didn't see the damage at the supermarket as I approached the car from the supermarket looking at the driver's side and boot.

If I go and get this sorted out by insurance, how is the blame going to be with? I always park away from the store and at least 4 parking bays from a trolley park (unless there's no other option). I have not mentioned this at the supermarket concerned either.

  • Im afraid you got to take the hit here car parks usually have disclaimers saying there not at fault. I know how you feel tho similar happened to be on a 3 week old car.

It will be tricky, unless you know exactly what occurred. If it was a windy day and there were hundreds of trolleys left around the trolley park and no one was collecting them, you may have a shout. But, as you only noticed the damage once you got home, and can't really say with certainty how it happened, there's not really much hope, I don't think.

Fortunately those disclaimers count for nothing if the damage was caused by the negligence of the supermarket or its employees.

Unfortunately there would appear to be no way of proving one way or the other how this accident occurred, short of obtaining any CCTV evidence that is available. In the absence of that evidence your chances of recovering anything from the supermarket for this would be remote at best.

Call the store in question, and ask to come to the store to see the footage from the cameras covering the car parks at the time. If they're hesitant, ask to speak to the store manager, say you spend £200 a week there and have been doing so for several years etc etc.

I was a manager at a supermarket until recently, and you'll be incredibly surprised just what the cameras pick up. A camera at one side of a store can read a till receipt at the other. The cameras outside are just as powerful :)

Yep, I'd pursue the CCTV route.

If you can't find a third party then it will go against you.

Also you need to consider whether you should pay for it yourself.
You need to add up your excess
    PLUS
loss of NCB for years on end
    PLUS
premium loading you will see for probably 3 years.

The total cost may be more than the repair.

    How old is your car?
Could you get a cheaper repair?
