I have a vauxhall astra diesel 17d and wish to change the timing belt. How do you lock up the cam and the pump. I believe there is a pin kit??

  • you can purchase a pin kit to do this but but they are pricey i'm affraid. SEALEY TOOLS and SYKES PICKAVANT and others do timing kits, but yor looking a good part of £50-£150 for it.

isuzu or GM engine? have you done a timing belt change before? is this your first time?

I am writing this on behalf on someone else, but they work in the trade, and can "acquire" the tools, but need to know how to lock up the pump/cam. Is there a way to do this, ?

Well, given that it's white, you stand next to no chance! :D

    If it's a non-turbo, it'll be a GM engine.
  • if he's in the trade and dont know how to lock off he shouldnt attempt it, if you get the pump and cam misallinged by by engine valves and it will be a non starter. check out a few youtube vids, familiarise yourself with the process for diesels.

99% it will be a x17dtl low blow gm lump.
Pump locked with a pin I think from memory is 8mm I use a drill bit, crank is clearly marked on the pulley and oil pump casting the cam does not get locked proper way is checking lobes on no1 with dti.
I time rest up and put own paint marks on all 3 if them to make easier.
Just make sure gemstones and water pump are changed aswell and tensioner is tensioned anti clockwise, seen several that have been done clockwise only to shread belt within 10k miles.
Anyone with mech knowledge should be able to change these belts as fairly easy.

thanks, i'll pass this on, he knows roughly how to do it, he wasn't sure where to put the drill bits, as his diesel engine isn't marked.
