Mustard as Green Manure - can I use supermarket seeds?

I've sprouted some mustard seeds from ASDA, so I know they're viable, just wondered if this strain of mustard can be sown as green manure?

Thanks!

  • Can't answer that one. We planted quite a bit of autumn green manure and its so expensive to buy. Will be interesting to see replies.
  • The cheapest place I found was

I bought 2kg of Tare/rye winter seed for £11.20 which is doing well and is up to about 12" high. 2kg is enough to do about half my 90x35ft plot.

You have to be careful with Mustard as this is the same family as brassicas and can promote clubroot if you have a problem on your site.

    Good Luck

Got mine (mustard) from tamar organics but i only wanted enough to grow in my raised beds and where my pots are going (just to keep the weeds down).

Agree about the problem it can introduce to brassicas.

I grew mustard this year and it has been great. Both lots are now chopped and dug in and They are in my rotation so I have taken account of the fact that they are brassicas. It grew really well and has been trouble free and the seed looks just like the mustard seed in my cooking box. I doubt if I will be growing it again next year but I am on a new allotment and wanted something quick to keep the weeds down, which it has done. Next year I will be harvesting comfrey and lots of it instead. The next door plot holder has a wonderful productive plot and says that she planted rye once and it was terrible to dig in. I am also experimenting with some clover in 2 raised beds at home but am no overly impressed so far
  • I grew Phacelia this year - didn't know what it was at first, came in a pack of mixed wildflower/wildlife friendly seeds. Then I googled it and saw it was a green manure - will definately be growing it at the allotment next year as apart from anything, it's a really attractive plant!
