How much do divorce solicitors cost?

2»

Comments

  • Mine cost me over £10k in solicitors fees and took me nearly 3 years to get. There were no children involved.

I first went for adultery, he contested this (even though I had proof), so I went for unreasonable behaviour, he contested this, so I had to wait until we'd been separated long enough.

He got legal aid, even though he had £86k in the bank, which was his share of the profit from the house sale. I really don't know how he got away with that?
  • Bloody hell. That's not what I wanted to hear though today appears to be truth day so it's par for the course. Thank you both.

Any useful tips on sorting an amicable divorce, or how to stop crying would be appreciated.

On the plus side, it's our 10th wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks time so I've saved on the price of a card and present I guess.

God love you, at least you have kept your sense of humour.

Recent research (on law in action on radio 4) reported that mediation tends to favour the stronger partner, if that's you, then go for it, if not, maybe think on.

My divorce 8 years ago cost about 3K, with kids involved, careful non-confrontational representation (mine) and a bumbling incompetent who was off sick all the time (his).
Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x

Heehee Well done for finding the positive - the money you saved from the anniversary card put towards something for you.

Don't knock yourself for crying - I think I kept kleenex in business!
I found comedy DVD's were a god send. I should write a letter and thank the likes of Peter Kay and Michael Macintyre! Failing that a good George Clooney Dvd - set your sights higher for next time ;)
Keep me posted on how you are doing - its tough but you will get there.

    Thank you.

I am most definitely not the stronger partner. My husband is more intelligent and sensible than I and over the years, I have made the mistake of leaving a lot of the decisions to him. I am by no means meek and mild, but he is such a know-it-all that it has been easier that way. I have never stood on my own two feet which is what is terrifying me - I don't know how to live alone!

He wants to sort our finances out amicably (in reality our joint assets consist only of the house, car and small savings account) and get the deal rubber stamped by a solicitor but I am afraid that I will let my good nature get in the way of ensuring a fair settlement. On the face of it, it sounds extremely fair so far - he wants to give me 50% of the equity we brought to the house and he will keep the house. I can have the savings (and will need it for mortgage/conveyancing fees etc) and we'll sell the car to repay most of the car loan.

Thank you for the good wishes all :o
