Stock Market Floatation

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6043406.stm

im intrested in buying into these shares, anyone knows when i can invest, id like to as soon as they are up for grabs.

another point - whenever certain comapanies says they are going to float - iv always been intrested in buying into the shares. but iv always noticed this happens:

1) we are going to float - declaration (like above)

2) and a couple of weeks later they are on the market trading with a +% gain!

id like to buy before they float (or asap as soon as they are available so i could get the x% premium!)

  • Well by its very nature, you can't buy the shares before they float, as they are not traded on any stock exchange. What you need is a broker to invest in US shares, and if you want to participate in the IPO (initial public offering), then you need a broker with access to IPOs.

Its called an IPO (Initial Public Offering) and the distributions of the shares are handled by one or more Investment Banks each having a different status in the offering. There is not always a retail tranche, i.e. sometimes only institiutional investors will be allowed to subscribe to the IPO.

Retail Offerings (to the general public) are normally announced by the Lead manager (main Investment Bank) in a newspaper advert, typically in the FT (Financial Times).

    Not all flotations are successful.
If its under subscribed or the price targets are not met the offering will be pulled before going to market like the Jessops IPO.
The price may also go down once the shares are tradable.
Also there may be a period in whcih you are not allowed to sell your holding as part of the conditions of the retail offering.

often shares start conditional trading prior to us private investors gettting a look in, often as a result of a house broker placing a substantial amount with institutions first.
