Hmmmm....my Avira updates are not slow and updating has not been a problem for quite a while now, maybe your internet is slow 23n1th or you have a virus/malware problem?........maybe you should try Avira ;)

As to Avira's nag screen when updating you can disable it if you want or do as I do, one click and it's gone.

Or I can stick with avast and have fast updates and no nagware, win win:T.

The slow updates (it might have changed now but I wouldn't know), and nagware are why I swapped along with avast being slightly below avira on tests in the past which is isn't now, plus its faster at scanning and uses less resources than avira atm.

Well each to their own 23n1th, I believe Avira is ahead on virus detection unless I'm mistaken anyway I like Avira as it's not intrusive.

You're not mistaken Avira Premium are 0.5% ahead of Avast Free in the latest av-comparative tests. However avast are lighter on resources mostly, faster scanning and has slightly less false positives.
  • The above advise is correct: uninstall McAfee from the control panel, use also the removal tool from McAfee to remove any bits remaining. Then install avira. However you should also run malwarebytes too alongside it.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 - FileHippo.com Download and install. Every time you open the programme up to do a scan, go to UPDATE tab, click on CHECK FOR UPDATES and then run a FULL SCAN. Remove everything it finds. Post a log on here if you see any infections.

was your mcafee a package also?

    i.e firewall/antirus/spyware in one

as if you are removing the package you will want to replace the different parts also as avira will be the anti virus part..

zone alarm/ commodo etc for a firewall

    malwarebtes/spybot/lavasoft adaware/ etc for a spy/malwarre program
