I'm being driven mad by pop up windows appearing on my computer. They are for dating, loans, casinos, debts - you name it, and they have appeared! I have a pop up blocker set up and have run all my spyware and ad-aware programs, but still they keep annoying me. It's slowing my computer down, and i can tell when one is coming because the computer seems to freeze for a few seconds and then its fine once the pop up comes up. I never click on them to open them up. I always close them as soon as they open.
Please help - its driving me mad!!!!! :mad:

What firewall and antivirus are you running?0

Hi,
Don't know about Firewall because I'm not very computer technology minded, but I know that i have Symantec Antivirus, Skybot - Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal.

Are they all up to date and have you done a full system scan on them all ?
spybot and adaware don't usually work well together.
Windows defender isnt fantasic but does stop the nasty spyware from getting in most of the time download that from https://www.mircosoft.com and do a full system scan with that too .If it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anywaySarcasm helps keep you from telling people what you really think of them

You don't say what OS you are using. If it's XP home, you may have Windows Messenger Service running. Check by doing the following;
1. Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double-click Services
5. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
7. Click the STOP button
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

Right spurs1234,
Yes, they are all up to date and have all had a full system scan done on them. I will try Windows defender soon.
Zahc,
Checked Windows Messenger and followed the instructions you gave. When I went to properties, it came up as Disabled. Also saw Firewall along the way and it said windows Firewall. Does this help? I'm lost when it comes to the technical side of things, but it you give me plenty of instructions then I can follow them.
Sorry to be a pest, but i really want to get this sorted before it does my head in :doh:

This procedure will solve many - if not all - your problems.

What operating system are you using please, and if it's XP what service pack?
To find out, go to 'start' and right click on my computer and select properties.
Also you say you have a popup stopper in place, what are you using?

PS, what PC helpman says!!0 -
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Pop up blocker is set through Windows Internet Explorer0 -
Also, I should say that when I got my computer updated last year, the guy who did it gave me a copy of Windows XP. Haven't had any problems in the past year. Could this have anything to do with it and could it hinder my progress?0
