How much is second hand furniture really worth?

Hi,

I am trying to buy my ex out of our property and he wants "his half" of what the furniture is worth, but I'm finding it pretty hard to value on the likes of ebay, due to completed listing prices varying so wildly... for example I have a Bosch dishwasher, on ebay dishwashers sell for £40-180.

Obviously I don't want to be paying him more than it is worth. I have the following main items, all bought 2 years ago and in pretty immaculate condition:

A black Bosch full size dishwasher SMS50E06 (paid £300 for)
A Hotpoint freestanding frost free fridge freezer (paid £270 for)
A black Smeg washing machine WM6314BK (paid £365 for)

We also own a few techy items, again 2 years old:
An Acer 4GB Windows Vista PC (paid £500 for)
A 32 inch Samsung flat screen tv (paid approx £320 for)
A 22 inch Acoustic Solutions flat screen tv/dvd (paid approx £200 for)

Then there's just minor things like an Argos filing cabinet, quite cheap Argos sideboard, Ikea chest of drawers, a microwave, etc etc

Thank in advance for any advice :o
Thank you to all posters :A

I'd say that anything reasonably new and in good condition would be worth about half it's price new. Certainly no more than that.

I would say less than that. Bear in mind that kitchen appliances are cheap to buy new so any 2nd hand value will reflect this. I think you will be lucky to get £100 each for the kitchen appliances. Probably £100 for the 32" and £70 for the 22". No idea about the laptop

For the laptop go on to the web and see what the price is for the same spec one i.e. hard disc size, graphics card.

You haven't given me enough information for me to do that for you. (Alternatively give me the full laptop model)

Also you need to note that a laptop today would be sold with Windows 7 so the laptop could easily be worth a third or less of the price you paid for it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I would say no more than 40% of the value of the item at todays prices and I think that my be generous.

Ask him what he values each item at. Once he has has said fifty pounds for this and ninety five pounds for that, agree with him and tell him that you will be perfectly willing for him to take the items and pay you your half at the rate he just decreed.

You may find that suddenly things are dropping in value!

I would ask a house clearance firm - I think you might be suprised what they - possibly a lot of sucking air through teeth then £50 the lot!

Yes, sometimes you cannot GIVE stuff away... My Mum was down-sizing a few years ago and was very upset how much her (pretty good, but not contemporary or antique) furniture wasn't worth... :(. I think some of her stuff they agreed to take away for free (ie not charge her for it's removal!).

It is worth what someone is willing to pay, though: your joint possessions (assuming they are in good condition) would be worth more to either of you than to a stranger...

Only what people are prepared to pay for it.

  • I've seen people selling fridges, cookers for £20-£30, and I have had to give away a desk which was in vgc but, I'm told, a bit big for people's homes now.

You are right. We are going through the same thing at the moment getting my dad downsized. He was quite upset at what the valuer had to tell him about his stuff and some of it is antique.

I hadn't seen you had written that when I posted immediately above this.

    Cheers
