Paypal took the money twice

Options
Hi,

I recently made an online purchase from a well-known store, and paid via paypal (I had no money in my paypal account so all the money came from my bank account). I received the item a few days ago.

However, I have just checked my bank statement and the money was taken out twice, at exactly the same time, with the same ref number. I logged into my paypal account and this only shows one transaction, as does my online order on the store's website.

So my question is, who do I contact first to try and sort this out? The store, paypal, or my bank?

Many thanks

First port of call for me would be to the bank to find out why a duplicate transaction could have occurred with the same reference number at the same time. Could just be a hitch on their part and easier to get a direct answer from your bank although don't be surprised if they pass the buck and say contact PayPal or the Merchant (you didn't hit a back button at some point during the procedure did you?).
Then contact the merchant next if no joy from your bank.

I have no doubt PayPal and the merchant will have the same thing to say as the bank 'You need to contact ***' .

Good luck hope you get it sorted quickly :)

We had a thread (which I can't find) with the same question, it looks like it is a glitch and ebay /paypal are aware of it. My son has the same problems, a £18 payment taken twice .

  • This happened to me. It was very annoying. It's not the store's fault - it's paypals or the banks fault. I printed out the bank statement with the double charge and the paypal statement and took them to the bank today. Apparently someone is going to ring me this week and I will get my money back.

Hi OP. This happened to me last week as well. I received the following email from paypal.

    Dear XXXXXXX,

Unfortunately, because of a technical error, a PayPal payment you made this week has been charged to your bank account twice. We’re very sorry for the mistake and can assure you that we are already issuing you with a refund, which will be with you in no more than five working days.

Please note that the payment you made will only appear once in your PayPal account, but it will appear twice on your bank statement. If by any chance you’ve been charged by your bank as a result of this, please contact us with details of the charges which we will also refund for you.

Again we’re very sorry for the mistake and for any inconvenience it may have caused. We are dealing with this issue as a matter of urgency. Should you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact us.

    Yours sincerely,

    PayPal

Unfortunately this was not before I had emailed the seller asking them to check if I had accidently ordered twice, and then phoned my bank accusing them of making a c*ck-up! (although as my bank is Santander nee A&L I didnt think this was an unreasonable assumption).

I was paid twice back in May. American dollars, turned up in my account twice. Paypal phoned me and said it was their error entirely, their system had blipped.
