LG Sound problems

We have an LG F7700 flat panel
Have sorted out our HD viewing with sky installing HD+ on Thursday
I have currently connected to the television the following
Sky+ Box via Scart
Sony DVD Recorder via Scart
When listening to the television normally we have the sound on about No11
when watching a recording from the Sky+ box we have to increase it slightly to maybe 14 or 15
When watching a DVD through the DVD recorder in order to hear the sound we have to whack it upto 25 or more to get the same sort of result as watching the tv normally
I understand that with some TV's you should set them up to optimal settings of which you can obtain from the net or AV forums. I cannot however find how to set up the TV to optimise the settings anywhere
Is the sound so crappy purely cos its going through a scart cable?
Is there anywhere i can go to get an idiots guide to set up the TV correctly

dvds have very 'dynamic' sound (big differences between quiet and loud)
