thanks for all the suggestions. and, i realised i never actually said what the budget is. I think i will probably have a max of 10k - but spread between savings, trade in, monthly etc etc. so no fancy jags, bmw, or mercs for me!

I had thought about estates, but wanted to have a bit better of a vantage point over the road (the perils of being short!)

my main concern, once purchased, will be fuel economy.... i would like at least 50mpg if possible... is that out of reach?

Thats where we started, Jags will be 5 years old for that money they should do just under 50mpg. I think the other premium brands will also be older than 4 years allthough mileage will be ok.

There are plenty of Octavia around that price 2-3 years old not so many estates also try the auto they are very nice to drive.

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/skoda/octavia/postcode/b11bb/radius/1500/maximum-mileage/up_to_60000_miles/price-from/8000/maximum-age/up_to_4_years_old/body-type/estate/sort/priceasc/price-to/10000/fuel-type/diesel
We want the L&K with the electric memory seats and all the other goodies which are a bit more and not many about.

Another way to look is to start with you home post code and radius and play around with autotrader to see what is in the price bracket localy that might influence what you can get to try.

Depends if you want 50mpg on a run or overall, and what kind of driving you do, i must admit that if I didn't do highish miles I wouldn't have a diesel.

Just not worth the hassle sometimes.
