Help on what card to get please

I have always had debit cards. I don't know why, but as I do a lot of shopping on the Internet i am thinking of getting a credit card. I never spend what isn't mine and only spend about 3k a year on my cards from shopping (although could be more but i have never counted). I earn approx 22k

I was thinking that the best card for me would be a cashback card and looking at Martin's article I think the Morgan Stanley card would be best? Although I don't know how up to date that information is because I suppose its an ever changing market? I also like to manage my accounts online e.g. checking statements and transferring to other accounts like my saving account and my nationwide account for when I go abroad.
Unless there is a credit card with a good savings account attached?

So many questions! Thanks for reading

  • If you have never had a credit card before then you may find it more difficult getting your first one. I believe that the cashback cards are generally more difficult to get (i.e. you have to have a better credit rating) so you may not be accepted by Morgan Stanley first time round.

The general rule of thumb is that the easiest first credit card to get is one with the bank that you hold your current account with (as they have all the details of your earnings and spending on file). Once you have had that card and managed it well for at least 6 months then your credit rating will be improved accordingly and you may be able to apply for other credit cards.

Indeed. I am in the same boat, blakea8k.

I applied for the amex plat and was declined - I can only guess because I have never had a card before. I'm going to apply through my bank (and I swear I will close my account if they decline me the useless incompetent bungling lazy barstewards that they are) but if this fails you can also try Vanquis or Crapital One who do cards with very punitive rates.

    Good luck!

edit - have been approved by my bank.

Try with your bank first, if they decline, you can always go for AQUA, capitalone or vanquis...

My first credit card was an egg card. I have since cancelled the account as I switched to egg money instead. It pays 1 percent cashback, plus they have offers at partner sites for up to 10 percent cashback too. They also offer 4 percent interest on a positive balance and only charge 7.9 percent interest on a negative balance. Good deal IMO.

    Thanks for all the reply's!!
I'm hoping I should have a bit of credit history as I have had 2 loans previously and a current mortgage. I don't know whether this is a coincidence, but I have been sent 2 pre approved application forms today, one for Morgan Stanley and one with capital one. Although does this mean anything?
My current debit cards are with Lloyds and nationwide so if I get declined I will try with them.
I like the sound of egg money so will have a look at that now. Anybody have any opinions of how these are like online? Or any more I should look at?
    Thanks again

Well I know with Capital One that if you've been sent a letter saying you have been provisionally accepted it means you have passed the credit check so pending suitable identification you will be successful with your application.

Am unsure about Morgan Stanley though - it may be worth you giving them a quick call to ask if the credit check has been completed.... of course you don't have to give any information about who you are. :D
