partial refund on ebay?

Hi

i recently sold an item that was sold as a pair.

the buyer said he wanted to return one of them as it was not as described but wanted to keep the other and requested a 50% refund of sale price.

so i agreed to this and asked him to send it back and will refund 50% of sale price.

buyer returned item and i have refunded 50% but buyer now wants the postage cost that he incurred to send it back!

what is my right on this? will i have to refund that too? what will ebay do if buyer decides to escalate it to ebay?

any info appreciated.

If they had opened a SNAD case they would have had to pay for the return postage, however if it was SNAD if I were the buyer I would be mighty peeved to have to pay the return costs. You are very likely to get a negative & low DSR's, which could be more damaging if you use ebay often then refunding postage costs, for something that isn't the buyers fault.
If it wasn't SNAD then you can wait for the neg & respond well to the feedback but there's nothing that you can do about low stars.

Maybe you should ask this question on the e bay community forum. I remember reading that you should NEVER give a partial refund, but I can't remember why. He may have ever only wanted the one in the first place. As you have accepted the return you have validated his claim that it was not as described, so he might be able to get his postage claim back.
