6-2/2-10 shifts

i've seen a couple of jobs that appeal to me and the hours are 6-2/2-10 on one and 5-45-2-15/1-45-10-15, you work an extra hour hour each day to get an early finish on a friday.
i've mentioned them to friends and family and and they have said dont do it, it will make you ill you wont have any time to do what you want etc...
but are working these hours really that bad?

How on earth would you not have time to do what you want? You finish early on Friday on lates, so work only 8, 2pm to 10pm shifts each month (ish).

These are standard factory shifts. If you intend to do factory work you will find it nigh impossible to find a typical day job when they operate 24 hours a day. In fact if you intend to work in retail, hospitality, call centres, you are screwed unless you will work shifts.

Then again the thought of any work makes some people ill...

In actual fact I quite like the fact that if I'm on an afternoons I can shop in the morning or go to the dentist etc without having to arrange time off.

The only part I don't like (because it's NHS) is it's not a set pattern

i think my family are just worried i wont be able to adjust, (just worried parents i think)
i've worked in a warehouse for the last seven years and been spoilt by nice 9-5 hours.
the thought of early starts does not bother me as i've never had a problem in getting up in a morning
i suppose there are good and bad points in working these hours.

It's not like working nights which can take time to adjust to.

Social life impact? Maybe that's what your parents are concerned about?

Given that you have just been made redundant and you are struggling to find a new job, I would have thought your parents would be giving you encouragement!

I used to work those shifts and loved them! The late shift 2-10 enabled you to have a lie, go shopping etc before, the early shift you could do it after or slob. You were still around during normal office hours to do the dentists/deliveries etc.

I don't see anything wrong with those hours at all. As other have said, they are standard in many industries.

And there are big benefits in not working a straightforward 9-5 shift every day - you can get to the bank, shops, doctor, dentist during the times when they are typically quieter as most people are at work. You will also not be travelling in rush hour, so your journey will probably be easier, and if using public transport you only have to pay Off-Peak fares.

An alternating shift pattern as you've described can also be a good thing - you're not on permanent earlies, so can plan nights out so that you can get a lie in the following morning. And you're not on permanent lates - which could have a negative impact on your social life.

    I say go for it.
  • go for the early starts if i were you. If not you'll probably end up sleeping late every day and working. Easy to end up with no life then. Get work out of the way, the rest of the day is yours.

My sister works 6-2 one week/2-10 next week. She's perfectly happy and has quite a good social life due to the shift rate she gets!

S/he'll only be working in the evening around 9 shifts a month, and never a Friday or Saturday night.
