Inner Double Glazing Pane Shattering!!

Options
This is my first post on this board so hope you don't mind me picking your brains.

One of my bathroom windows is small, situated on the outside wall of my home. For the 2nd time in about 5 years the inner window pane of glass has completely shattered. Me and the kids were all downstairs thankfully so it's not one of them. This happened in one of the small panes of glass in my living room.
there is no evidence of the house moving (no cracks or anything) and it's not a change in temp as heating isn't on and it's not in full sun.

So any of you glaziers or window men/women shed any light on why it would shatter? And no it's not supernatural ;)

This happened to me last week on a velux skylight!

Apparently its heat expansion & can happen when its very cold outside & warm inside (though there has to be a weakness in the pane of glass).

My insurance has allowed me to claim for the repair.

I am not going to bother claiming as the cost of the pane will be less than the excess.

Thanks for the explanation, glad I am not the only one. It frightened the life out of me!!!

  • Probably so, but as mine was a velux window, they are quite costly to replace.
  • Call Velux and they will repair it for you free of charge - it is a product fault, that's why they will do it FOC

The reason for it shattering is that gas escapes between the panes and a vacuum is created and the inner pane explodes into the room.

Call Velux contact centre on 01592 778225 and tell them you have had a window that exploded and they will send an engineer as a priority they will also change any other velux windows you have with laminated panes so it doesn’t happen again.
