  • I think you need an electrician.

Most likely a loose connection on the light fitting, but also possibly a faulty switch.
Your kitchen lights will be on a different circuit-normally there are separate lighting circuits for downstairs and upstairs.
But don't try and DIY unless you know what you are doing and know how to isolate the circuit safely.

  • "tripped the switch" - presumably you mean the circuit breaker and you switched it back on before you tried switching on with the new bulb in? What happened when you tried the new bulb, did it just not work or did the circuit breaker trip again?

Nothing happened when I changed the bulb but it didnt trip

Its only a small flat - I would have thought that all the ceiling lights would be connected

Well if the kitchen light is still working when the MCB is tripped, then it must be on another circuit.
A flay can still have more than onelighting circuit.
If you look at your CU, each MCB should have a label beneath showing what circuit it controls. Usually two or more lighting circuits and two or more ring mains, plus a separate one for the kitchen.

    Thanks

Hopefully its just a the wiring then in the bedroom - would that stop the others working too.

Same thing happened in the hall about a year ago and it was just a loose wire but that didnt affect any of the other lights
  • Depends on the nature of the wiring fault - if it's a break in the loop wire (the red live wire from the consumer unit), it will prevent all lights on the circuit working, so that's what it could well be in your setup. If you are in any doubt about tackling it yourself, call in an electrician
