Insurance Question - Like for Like

Our laptop hinge broke and I phoned the insurance company to see if it is covered. The news is that it is. But I am now confused. They say they will take it away to assess it - repair if possible or replace it on a like for like basis. If they have to replace it does that mean I will get some money or enough to buy a new laptop. The one that is broken is an HP Pavilion DV9000 operating on xp with 17 inch screen and was bought about 3 years ago for £500. I know I have personal belongings cover for £1500. They said they should collect it today for assesment (away for a couple of weeks) and they can make a back up of the hard disk for extra cost. If they do pay out we won't get it back.

Can you help - thank you.
