I might want to start a blog, where do I begin?

Don't know much about blogging other than it's kinda like an online diary that you can update as often as you want.

1) I'm assuming you can do this for free?

2) Can anyone read your rantings or only people you allow?

3) Where would I go to start one?

Think it's free but everyone can read it.

If you have a gmail account you can use blogger for free.
It's like you said, an online diary that you can update.
There are privacy settings, such as 'Don't let search engines find it'.
I think anybody can read the blog if they know the URL, but I might be wrong.

I use Wordpress. It's free, easy to set up and use but it has the advantage of being powerful so that if you want to harness more of it's features down the line you can. In fact a lot of people use it to build their websites as well as blogs.
