Combi Boiler tripping out Electrics

Hi all,

My combi seems to be tripping out my electrics. Has anyone experienced this problem before and know of a solution. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Is the boiler circuit protected by a main RCD in your fuse board.
  • Not a very easy thing to trace, perhaps the pump or fan are burnt-out
    Clive the gas
  • Check the fuse rating in the fused spur next to boiler. It should only be 2 amp. This should fuse before it trips out. If the fuse is too big i.e. 13 amp it won't. You've still got a problem with your boiler but it shouldn't affect anything else.

Only correct if its tripping an MCB on a board not protected by an RCD.

The RCD should trip at 30 milli amps, therefore it will trip before a 2 amp fuse ruptures.
If you are sure it is your boiler that is causing the problem you will need to get it electrically tested (assiming by the original post you are not up to the job yourself). One of the components may be breaking down. You could do a visual check of all wiring associated with the boiler, with it tuned off, to see if any obvious damage, burnt cables etc, can be seen.

I had that once. The RCD kept tripping, say once a week. An electrician couldn't find any faults, so decided to isolate the fault by making 'protected' circuits 'unprotected' one by one: he started with one ring main, and left. The next day, a control board in the boiler blew itself to bits. BG replaced it. The ring was re-protected (bad terminology, but you get the drift). The RCD kept blowing, and BG were a permanent fixture at our house. I studied the blown board, and suggested that one particular component looked likely to be the culprit (BG never had the time to trace the circuit diagram, yet had time to make multiple visits).

On examination, the dodgy component was covered in carbon; it was replaced and the problem went away.

IIRC, it was the 'limit stat' at the top of the boiler (Myson Midas), somewhere near the heat exchanger.
