MBNA - suspect dirty trick

Hi,

Last month I carried out a balance transfer with MBNA on line.

I accessed my account homepage and opted for the "0% until 18 Oct 2011" option.

This took me to page "my promotions- 0% til 2011 etc etc" and I clicked on transfer balance-this took me to another page where I could only enter the balance transfer card issuer detail but I wanted the balance transferred into my current account as I had several cards I wished to consolidate and this page only gave me the option of transferring the balance from one.

I saw an option on the same screen “transfer money into current account" so I clicked this and entered current account details and processed the transaction.

I received my paper statement on Saturday and was horrified to discover that interest of £133 had been applied when I believed I was on a 0% offer.

I rang MBNA and they advised me that I had clicked the wrong icon and the standard interest rate applied and that I would need to phone their "interest and fees department" on Monday to see what they can do for me!!!

I have made several balance transfers to my current account in the past with a variety of providers including MBNA but have never experienced this type of problem until now.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so what was the outcome?

Any input appreciated.

JK

I hardly think this is a dirty trick. You made a mistake.

I've done both types of transfer with MBNA. It's always clear what deal you are choosing when you click on it. I believe the detail is repeated before you confirm. Sometimes they offer promotions on both BTs and money transfers, sometimes only on one. Often the fee is higher on money transfers.

It seems you wanted the BT deal to operate on the money transfer.

Perhaps MBNA will adjust your deal when you speak to them, I hope so.

I think this is a good warning to people to be careful what they select. I always take screendumps as I go along in case of a dispute or need to refer back. Unless their IT system has had a problem or is different from when I did my last transfer (a month ago) I don't think there are any dirty tricks here.

It makes me chuckle when people come on here blaming all and sundry for their mistakes and stating that they've been tricked, conned, scammed !

Funnily enough it always seems to be new posters. Makes you wonder how true some of these stories are !!

Yet again its always MBNA fault. I sometimes think would be customers should have to take a written test to see how observant they are.
  • Perhaps posters should have a written test to see how smug they are?. Perhaps it's not needed because it's self evident?

Yes the OP made a mistake, and MBNA no doubt will be generous enough to refund the money and offer to improve their website to ensure that people are less likely to make expensive mistakes - (like doing any kind of business with MBNA).

Perhaps they won't, hoping that people continue to fall foul of their T+C's, all of which are scrupulously fair and reasonable given that they work closely with the FSA to ensure that is the case...

Maybe I'm biased given that I've been Ripconstolescammed by them in the past.

Maybe the OP should get a credit card with someone/anyone else - the more people that vote with their feet the better...

    (cue the "unecessary rant" response...)
