Recommended Spread Betting Courses for shares ?

Ladies and Gents,

I wish to start spread betting with shares and I have already started to research the subject. There are a host of companies on the net that offer courses / tutorials at all sorts of prices, from 'free' to several thousand pounds.

Can anybody suggest any courses that they have had success with ???

Rgds.

  • I don't know about courses, but the following book is excellent for beginners in spread betting (I would also recommend the author's first book, 'The Naked Trader' as a starting point on all things related to investing in shares).

    Spread Betting:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Naked-Traders-Guide-Spread-Betting/dp/1906659230/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287936480&sr=1-2

    Investing in shares:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Naked-Trader-Anyone-Trading-Shares/dp/1905641516/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287936480&sr=1-1

I understand from the author's website that he also does courses/training sessions:

  • There are all sorts of so-called 'courses' out there. Typified by offers of "free" seminars, which are there merely to get you signed up to expensive courses.

If there was anything at all true in what they claim, then of course they would not be telling you the 'secrets', they would simply be creaming the market themselves.

For longer term share 'investing' then you should stick to learning about "fundamental" analysis, perhaps as typified by 'naked trader' as mentioned in previous posting.

For shorter term 'day-trading' then the emphasis shifts to "Technical Analysis". The concept of technical analysis is, these days, very deep and quite technical. However, despite there being hundreds of techniques and 'indicators', they are (by definition) all based on past data, and as realists know, past data is no guarantee of the future. Hence, they really aren't worth a lot. If they were, computers could be programmed to trade successfully.

So far, computers have not been taught to trade successfully.

Finspreads had a free "trading academy" introductory guide with their offer, when I did it a few years back.

I haven't been on one, but I know Malcolm Pryor offers courses, they aren't cheap. If you read his books which are pretty good introductions to the subject IMO, it should at least give you an idea if you want to hear more from him. His methods are more technical orientated as opposed to the above mentioned Naked Trader.
  • Thanks Silverbullit, Loughton Monkey, Debbie42 and Turbobob for your prompt replies.

I know that the son of one of my work colleagues has recently paid about 3000 dollars for a course through the School of Trade website, with mixed success I might add ! Although to be fair he is in profit at the moment.

I was trying to get some feedback of other peoples' experiences, before I paid for a course with my hard earned cash.

Am I right in saying that from your replies above, some of you have never attended any course and are self taught "spread - betters" ?
I was looking for a course in addition to my own research and learning, to try and minimize the risk.

If that is the case how long has it taken you to become reasonably proficient?

The reason that I am hoping to do this, is that I would like ideally to someday have an extra income stream from spread-betting.

    Rgds.

Yes, I occassionally spread bet and I've never attended a course, just through reading etc. TBH I could say reasonably proficient in that I don't lose much money :) And even have the occassional winner :) This is no easy route to an extra income though..

I used to think my deep study of horse racing form made me a better judge than Sporting Index. £2000+ down on one bet changed my mind!

    Be very very careful.

    Turbobob,

It's good to hear that there are people like yourself, that have "had a go" and made money.
I am also very interested to hear of people's experiences in spread-betting !

I am not looking at replacing my day job and I do appreciate the risks involved.
I am looking for a fair return, but a return that is worth the risk and "work" involved.

I have done a fair amount of research on the subject and that was why I was wondering if any of the advertised courses were worth it or if they were just moneymaking exercises for the spreadbetting companies.

From what I have heard so far I will be going back to the books and kicking the idea of a course into touch. If anybody think's that my strategy is wrong I would love to hear from them.

    Rgds.

Its a good idea to start with something unleveraged - e.g. shares.
