switching current accounts - direct debits failed

I've recently switched current accounts, and I used the "switcher" service offered to me by my new bank. I opened the new account on the 22nd Sept. On 28th they wrote to me to say all my "regular payments" ie standing orders and direct debits would be going out of my new account from the 4th October. I thought, wow, that's quick and quickly moved some money in to cover the direct debits due on the 5th and 10th of the month.

However neither of the two direct debits went through from either account. I have phoned up the first one, which was for my electricity, and they couldn't tell me which account they'd tried to take it from, but said it was rejected. I haven't phoned the second one up yet, as that's my student loan.

Now what I am wondering is if both direct debit companies didn't get the letter advising them to change over the details until after they already had asked for the DD from my old account, by which time my old bank had cancelled it their end.

Has anyone else had this sort of thing?

I am glad my credit card direct debit was due on the 1st, as that went out of my old account fine! I could imagine them charging me lots of fees and charges for this mistake.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

I currently tried to change my DD from one bank to another bank. It has been taking 2 months....just managed....then the 3rd month, my DD will start from the new bank. I am not sure what is wrong...But my credit card company DID want to charge me late fee and interest. Of course after argument for a while, a few calls, e-mails...been sorted out...
