I cannot install an O/S on my HDD. I have run chkdsk and got a message which reads - The volume appears to have one or more unrecoverable problems.
Does this mean a new HDD please?

try this...
go into Dos via a windows 98 boot disk or a xp disc using the recoverly consol.
type FIXBOOT then enter then type FIX MBR then enter then type CHKDSK.
(this has worked for me many times before however mine still dies now and again.)0 -
