There will be no damage to the engine. There may be damage to some of the seals in the fuel injection system but you'll only know for sure once its been drained, refilled and run for a while. Despite what the doom mongers say, its not really likely especially the claim about the injectors and turbo seeing as they're basically the same as petrol injection engines on common rail diesels.

I forget which way round this works, but I think you're better off having put petro in a diesel car than diesel in a petrol. I believe Diesel has a lower running temperature than petrol, so it probably won't be able to get hot enough to do any real damage to your engine. Petrol however will potentially just melt the crap out of diesel components, as it runs hotter, and Diesel parts are made to run Diesel, which works cooler. I don't know that for certain mind you, but I htink it works roughly along those lines.

    ne sutor ultra crepidam.
  • We did this to a Golf Tdi 2or 3 years ago. No problems with the engine since.

  • You won't have damaged anything but your pride. The stories of lack of lubrication are just that: stories. Drank the tank, change the fuel filter, refill with diesel, and it'll be fine.

went of to work early this morning filled car up with petrol to 3 quarters of a tank drove about 2 and half miles and car broke down stupid me had put petrol in a diesil car:mad: rang green flag they qoted me £250 to drain it and sent someone out who wanted to take the car to the other side of huntiongton im in northamptonshire  so i said its to far for me to collect, so im home car about 5 miles away and im trying to get hold of local garages for prices, just wanted to ask what the likley hood if ive damaged the engine? thanks in advance

Been there, done that, got the T Shirt, Drove 3-4 miles before it started spluttering and cut out completely. The breakdown took me to garage where they charged me 80 quid to drain the tank, refilled it with diesel (another 40 quid) and I had no problems subsequently.
