Good point. While you're here...I wonder if you have any suggestions for healthy treats for puppy training, please?

One of the breed specific traits of a labrador is that they eat...

..so use his food for training and add into the mix lots of different and interesting (and healthy) things.

I never bother with specific 'dog treats' - very expensive.

For training I use hot dog sausages - 50p a tin in iceland. They can be cut up very tiny. Cheese - in moderation. The dog's own food. pasta.. cooked and raw, cornflakes, bread crusts, raw carrots, cream crackers, loads of other things that I can't recall as well. Mostly, because my dogs are raw fed, I use kibble as this is a novelty to them.
A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.
  • The only thing I would really say is find something puppy really finds the best treat in the world and only feed that when training, not at other times. (Does that make sense?)

total sense. Same as us really, if I had champagne every day for breakfast it wouldn't be a treat any more (:rotfl:)

Treats can be a minefield as well as feeding in general - I feed raw and lots of veg and fruit. I also feed natural yoghurt, rice, carrots, cucumber. Choose something smelly like cheese or hot dogs........they'll soon get the hang of it!

    AND WE NEED PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!

    Best of luck

Thanks, I went armed with a camera yesterday, but will take pics when we have chosen, in two weeks' time. ALL of them looked really healthy and gorgeous.

Thanks for these ideas, are cheese and hot dog sausages ok for salt content?

Cheese I'd only give occasionally. Never thought about the salt in sausages but as one whole sausage could feasibly divide into a hundred treats I'm sure it isn't a problem.

  • Brilliant, thanks. I'm really excited, but trying to temper it with realism. DD1 (who will be involved a lot, though the dog is not for her alone) was actually more interested in playing with one of the mother's "teenage" daughters(canine), than the puppies, which I took as quite a good sign.
It was only DD2 who did the "they're sooo cute" routine, and she's three, so I'll let her off!

    eta thanks, danlojo

She's gorgeous , just like my late choccy lab Amber. The hip score is ok but make sure you get copies of the certs for both hips and eyes, as cataracts are a massive prob in labs :D
Finally take your yeast vite, and enjoy:D:D:D
