Q Do we have to declare accident in company car?

Hello all,

:question:Just renewing my car insurance and was wondering if anyone knows whether we have to declare a claim that was made for a company car. My husband and I both have our own cars and own personal car insurance policies, but last year, my husband had a company car in which he had an accident. His company claimed. Do we have to declare it or does it only apply to claims we've made on our own policies? Advice greatly appreciated!

Usually the question asked by insurers is whether YOU have had any acidents. Not whether you personally have made claims. They want to assess your competence as a driver - whatever car(s) you're driving.
42 years of experience in the insurance industry.
And nothing the industry tries do to us surprises me any more!
  • Some years ago (10 to be precise) I had an accident in a company lease car, my fault I ran in to someone at low speed on an island.

The company insurance was self insurance up to 10k. i.e. company paid up to that amount so presumably wouldn't be reported to the insurers? and the other insurance company was reimbursed for the damages directly.

When I went to a private car I arranged insurance and when I answered the question about previous accidents mentioned I had a minor bump some 3 years previously, not sure when. The call centre person was able to tell me the exact date.

So yes declare the bump as the details will be recorded.
  • It's very easy for Insurers to find out if you have had an accident, although this usually won’t be looked into until you make a claim. If they find out you have not declared an accident it can be considered a material non disclosure and they may void your policy. In the current financial climate Insurers are quite hot on policy violations.

It would be advisable to notify them of the accident as having a policy voided will have serious effect on your ability to get Insurance.
