If I get a new HDD can I simply load a Windows onto it and have a working PC again?
Not necessarily, there may be other problems, put the old disk back in, when you switch the pc on press f8 often when you see the dell screen. If that does not work then try going into the BIOS ie switch on again press f2 or delete it should say which on the Dell splash screen. Make sure the boot section sees your disk and is selected first.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . If there is another problem (i.e HDD is fine) what could it be? Given that the HDD is working fine in other PC, what would cause it to not work in the broken PC? I'd have thought that the HDD was the 'brain' and that any problems would be within that?"To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0 -

Could be one of many things, eg a loose keyboard, loose memory chips, the list is endless it could be a problem with cpu fan well you get the gist. The Brain of the PC is the CPU and the Motherboard and BIOS that holds the other bits together
