I will soon be going out to Tenerife for a couple of months and will want to access the internet. For low security items like email I am prepared to use wifi hot spots or internet cafes, however, on occasions I may want to use internet banking and would like to be secure. Could I buy say a Vodaphone dongle for use over there or is there a better way.

Online banking is 'secure' anyway, I've never had any bones about doing banking stuff from places like Cafes, Starbucks, hotels etc. A dongle will cost you an absolute fortune (£5 a megabyte abroad or so).Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Only if they use a UK operator!
If you are out there for a couple of months, then the OP might want to buy a dongle from a local provider. This website has some discussion on providers and prices http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8671
This was just the first website on a google search 'mobile broadband spain' but gives you an idea of cost.0 -
As an alternative would it be reasonable to find an internet cafe and ask to use their cables to attach to my laptop. This way keyloggers etc would not get my information. As I have said it is only for bank or credit card transactions that I feel reluctant to use someone elses facilities, for normal email I have no problem.Change is here to stay0

I certainly did just that to access any sensitive accounts when I was in Bulgaria for a few months earlier this year - the internet club owner was very helpful, even sorting out a power extension cord.As an alternative would it be reasonable to find an internet cafe and ask to use their cables to attach to my laptop.0 -

You really shouldn't consider email to be a low security priority. Think how many services you use that send information to your email account, including passwords and log in info.0 -

You should use your own computer, many public access computers are not secure. Use a bookmark to a secure web page.
Bear in mind someone evesdropping on your internet connection would be able discover:- Which bank you use.
- When you are doing your banking.
- What sort of operation you are doing.
