Just gone self employed - signing on?

DH went self employed 2 weeks ago after 2 months (off and on) on contributions based jsa. He's had bits of work, but the advertising won't be out til 1st November, therefore it's unlikely he'll earn anything this week. Would he be eligible to sign back on?

Why is he waiting for the advertising to come out to go find work? Does he think that as soon as the advert is in print that work will magically appear?

Sorry, doesn't work like that. You have to actively go and look for it. If you're any good, eventually you'll be getting it by word of mouth.

Very little, if any, of my business is from advertising. The majority of it is word of mouth. I've even cut my advertising to bare minimum - basically a Yellow Pages entry, Google and putting my website on email/newsgroup signatures. Adverts in local papers were just burning money. A friend who is in the same line of business as me even used to have full page ads in the local weekly and it didn't generate enough business to cover the cost. The ones that worked the best for me were the ones I placed in newsagents and on chip shop/takeway notice boards where there's a captive audience. You'll be amazed how many people read business cards on chip shop noticeboards as they're waiting for their tea to be cooked :D
  • He's obviously not just relying on advertising and has been generating bits of work through word of mouth, face to face approaches etc, it was because of a couple of approaches that he started when he did, as we didn't want to lose the opportunity to build a customer base. It's just there's no work on the horizon just yet so was wondering if there was any potential support.

This wouldn't be an option with my income - although we may be able to claim the child element now.
