credit rating - owe some money to HMRC

hi guys
had plenty of problems with my credit rating. have difficulty getting anything on credit (cards mobile contract etc)
got my credit report but it all looks cool... cant find what it is thats messing my rating up. its getting real upsetting.
been thinkin and wondering what it could be thats doing it.
a few years ago i quit work because i wasnt happy there, but didnt go on the doll as i didnt want to become dependent on it.. hopefully giving me even more reason to find a job. i was living at home with my parents at the time so i wasnt gonna end up on the streets. so.. after a few years out of work and not on the doll i received a letter from HMCR saying that i owed some money. cant remember what it was now, it was about £60... i didnt have that spare at the time so didnt pay it. it said i had a few years to pay it so filed it at the back of the drawer.. it might have been national insurance or stamp duty.. or something (hoping you might have an idea)
would this money i still owe (i spose..?) be the problem messing my rating up? ive been employed for about 3 years since.

many thanks

If HMRC reckoned they owed you money, I don't think they would simply give up after one letter - I suspect that it actually may have been telling you that you hadn't made any NI contributions recently and giving you the opportunity to buy some in order to preserve you pension and JSA rights......

Presumably you can't now find that letter to check ?

As far as not going to be able to get credit - what do you earn ? Do you already have any credit ? How much ? Have you moved recently and are you on the electoral roll ?

No, owing money to HMRC won't effect your credit rating. Sounds like optional NI contributions, as noticed. Else they would send further reminders.
  • thanks guys. just clutching at straws.
whenever i try to open a bank account or get a mobile phone or credit card i have to have special treatment where they have to ring and check to see about my credit etc etc.. usually comes back negative. my bredit report is clean. i do have a £700 credit card that i pay minimum payment on and also an hsbc bank account thats empty and no longer use... could these be the problem?

are you on the electoral roll
    what is your income
what bank accounts do you have and how much is paid into them each month
do you only have one CC?
what exactly do your credit files say?
  • yes on electoral roll
i have 3 bank accounts. barclays (where my wages are paid into, £1100 a month after tax) which has a £350 overdraft, abbey national which i use as a reserve (direct debits attached to this account which i pay into to cover these costs). the abbey account has a £350 overdraft. I also an hsbc account that i got a few years ago but never really used it (i think its got about £5 in it).
i have one credit card i got about 4 years ago which has a £700 limit on, i used £650 of it to buy a pc and paid minimum payment on it ever since. theres £400 left to pay on it.
my credit file doesnt actually "say" anything. its just got the accounts on there and my credit card with all the green ticks, no late payments or missed payments noted.
the house i used to live in with my parents was repossed 3 years ago and now live in rented accomodation.

    any ideas guys?

    many thanks for your time
