Has anyone got a wall bed

We are thinking of purchasing a Swingaway wall bed http://www.hideaway.co.uk/

Has anyone got any experience of this bed, or any type of wall bed?
We want to use a small room as both an office and occaisional spare bedroom.

We are concerned about :-
1. whether they are safe
2. How do you stop the pillows slipping off the end - seems to be a gap between the mattress ending and the wall?
3. How easy are they to fit - we know that they need to be screwed to the floor and not sure what the floorboards are like!

We have got a good deal on one (under £200 as it's bankrupt stock) if we want to go for it. We would be having it without any cupboards by the way.

Thanks for any feedback.

  • Hi
I haven't got a wall bed, but did use one at a holiday let a couple of years ago. We used the bed for the week with no problems. I can't for the life of me remember what happened to the pillows but do remember we did not have to make the bed up each night. Each morning it closed back into the wall unit it was housed in. Thought it was a great idea and are considering it ourselves for our office when we have some spare cash.
It seemed sturdy however the let was on the ground floor so that may have made a difference.

Not sure if this is any help.
  • anyone else have any feedback on this?? Thanks!
  • I had a wall bed in a tiny studip flat I lived in.. It drove me absolutely INSANE.

The pillows do slip inbetween the mattress and the wall unless you stuff the gap with something (which of course you have to then remove if you put the bed back up into the wall..

I also had to remove the pillows and duvet whenever I put the bed back up otherwise I risked it crashing back down again as it was 'too full' if you get me.

The mattress was also terrible but that's not the fault of the wall bed! Hated the damn thing in all honesty.
  • Well, we've just gone for it and bought one as seems only viable solution to our space issue. Fingers crossed... have bought it with a Memory Foam mattress so should be comfy anyway!!

I used to live in a studio flat with a double wall bed...was absolutely brilliant! There were straps to hold the bedding in place and I don't recall any problems with the pillows. It was sturdy, never felt at all flimsy. It came with the flat so we didn't install it - we lived there with it for 3 years and never had any problems. One of our friends in a neighboroughing flat had a shelf in the cavity bit. It was deep enough that things on the shelf were undisturbed as the bed was folded up. I knew other friends in studios/bedsits at the time who had to make up a sofa bed and no way would I have traded places for a moment. Hope you enjoy yours :)
  • Brilliant, that is good to know!
  • I am a regular user of Hideaway Beds, my company buys and rents studio appartments. I have been using Hideaway for nearly 5 years and have bought around 11 beds and mattresses from them so far.

I was reccommended them by a friend and at first I had the same concerns, I bought a double bed and foam mattress throught their clearance/promotions page which was at a reasonable price.

from what I can remember the bed arrived within a week and was relatively easy to put together (althought it was my husband who did it).

I now have Wall Beds in all the studio's I rent and havent had any complaints from my tenants regarding the pillows slipping etc. Sometimes get the odd slat but they can be replaced easily.

I think you will be pleased with it :)

Not sure what you mean by Bankrupt stock though as they are still in business.

Just for information, we now have had our wall bed (Hideaway Beds) in place for several months. We have it fitted without cupboards so there is a gap between bed and wall. I have resolved this in a low-tech but reasonably effective way by stuffing a spare duvet very tightly in the gap and then putting pillows on top. This can then all be taken away when the guest is gone and the bed is folded up.

No guest has noticed the gap and they all say the bed is very comfy! We purchased a thick memory foam mattress for it. It means our small spare room can work as an office and a bedroom. The fitting instructions weren't great (I fed this back to the company) but other than that we are really pleased with it.

People've died in wall beds... SRSLY.

I looked at a studio flat once that had one - it was "up" and I said to the agent I wanted to pull the bed down, then get it up again - to see if I could manage it.... and I couldn't. He kept trying to help me and I said "Are you really going to be at my beck and call twice a day, every time I want to get this bed down or up? No..... I can't do it, I'm too small. It's useless."

I just wasn't tall enough/didn't have enough strength to be able to use it.

That bird in the Hideaway video's seriously beefy ... huge and beefy. Bed wouldn't argue with that shot-putter.

The bed that we have couldn't be easier to pull down, and it is not possible for it to go up again when you are lying on it. The weight of the mattress keeps it down. Guests have not even been aware it is a wall bed once it is down.

I am not in the slightest big or particularly strong!!

I guess different makes of bed vary - I am only giving feedback on the one we have, which is fitted correctly.
