The Scottish National War Memorial, located inside Edinburgh Castle is free to enter. You just present yourself at the ticket office and tell them you wish to visit it. In theory they should get someone to escort you there and wait to escort you back. In practice they never do, they just let you go into the castle free.
  • Hey just wondering if the locals could help me out here,

We are in Edinburgh sunday 28th - tues 30 and figure we'll do the free castle on tuesday...what do you recommend we see on the list for the sunday?

Two adults, public transport bound but don't mind the train if its worth travelling outside of edinburgh a bit.

Any ideas most welcome, VERY tight budget and am rather happy to have co-incided our trip with st andrews day when it means free entry into things :p
  • Hi, not an expert just a local, would imagine the castle will be chock a block over the free weekend so think it's wise to go on the Tuesday. I honestly think most of the "big" visitor attractions will be heaving.... ie Stirling Castle, someone said Edinburgh Zoo might be free but also would be mobbed! These are the smaller venues which are easy to get to by bus or train....

    Craigmillar Castle (within Edinburgh)
Dirleton Castle (30 min bus or train)
    ··Dunfermline Palace (ditto)
    ··Edinburgh Castle *
    ··Linlithgow Palace (ditto)
··Stirling Castle (50 mins bus or train)
··Tantallon Castle (30 min bus or train)

    Hope this helps...

It's not free but you could go to Rossyln Chapel which was featured in the Davinci Code http://www.rosslynchapel.org.uk/ it's just outside Edinburgh but you can get a no 15 bus from the centre of Edinburgh, Craigmillar Castle as previously mentioned is also good, it's a ruin but just has something about it it's also free on the weekend mentioned http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/index/places/propertyresults/propertyabout.htm?PropID=PL_123&PropName=Craigmillar%20Castle I'm not sure what buses go there. If your going to St. Andrews because of the golf connection you might like to know that the first golf club in the world is in Edinburgh, it's just a park where we all walk our dogs now but if your staying local to Leith you could always take a walk http://www.scottishgolfhistory.net/leith_links_first_golf_competition.htm. If it's a nice day there's also the Royal Botanical gardens http://www.rbge.org.uk/the-gardens/edinburgh.If you like ships there's the Royal yacht Britannia which is in Leith docks http://www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk/ I'll wait til oh gets up and see if he has any other ideas, he's now a tour guide and takes people all over the country.

The museum in Edinburgh is great or at least I remember it being great from being a kid and my dad took us to while my mum shopped!! If I remember correctly Greyfriars Bobby's grave is also along the road a lovely story for the kids.....
  • Thank you all so much! V. useful info here, might head to Glasgow on the citylink bus (as i've signed up and can get student discount!) on the monday as well (we like to pack it all in :rotfl:)

Absolutely love the museum will probably pop in and see a few things we missed last time. And will visit one of those castles too, just have to decide which one! Staying the the city centre Travelodge (two nights for £10.25!!! Bargain I got with the sun offer a couple of months ago!)
