Finding out where a transfer came from

I opened an account about a week ago, and put some money in it. I have not done anything since, but I just looked at it, and there has been a transfer of £25 into it. All it says is that it's a transfer from a certain bank account number that I don't recognise. I certainly didn't do this, and nobody even has the details of this account yet. Is it a mistake? Perhaps someone entered my number when trying to transfer?

I also thought it might be from the bank, as some kind of reward for newly opened accounts, but I can find nothing about that (you'd think it would be mentioned if they were doing that).

Is there any way I can discover whose bank account it is that it came from?

sounds like a mistake if you haven't given the details to anyone. I'd mention it to the bank and above all, don't spend it.
  • This has recently happened to me (3 weeks ago). I noted a large amount of money had been put into my account. I phoned the bank and they started an investigation. It transpires this was an error from a company. I have not spent the money but further investigation revealed they made a similar payment back in June. Unfortunately, I have spent this without noticing :-(. I have now had a letter from the company, sent to my bank who forwarded it to me, requesting I pay the money back. I have no idea what to do. I can pay back the last payment but do not have the money to pay back the first payment they made. Like you I do not know what to do, or what I should be doing? They say they are going to take further legal advice if I do not pay the money back within 14 days! Has anyone else had a similar experience?

whilst you shouldn't have spent money you knew wasn't yours (and yes, I know you said you didn't notice it), you should contact them and explain that you are willing to repay them, however you can only afford to pay them X amount a week and not the full sum they requested.

You do have to pay the money back, but as it's technically their error, they'd be foolish not to accept your offer to return the money gradually. Don't whatever you do ignore their letters

    Write back and state that:
You can pay of the latest amount as you noticed this and started the investigation ensuring you kept it separate. Say that you missed their first mistake and it was spent in the usual course of your life and paying back now would significantly damage your previous and current standard of living (forcing you to go into debt, which you have not guarantee of being able to arrange). Say you'll able to pay it back in £X amounts over X number of months on day X. If they are happy with this please send a letter agreeing, with the bank account details and when you receive this letter you'll transfer the last months money and set up a SO to pay back the other instalments starting the following month.
