Hairdressing and beauty courses

Hi

if you're under 18 and on benefits then do you have to pay the fees for the hairdressing course in college or 6th form and do you have to pay for the equipment for the course?

  • you need to make enquiries at your local college or on their website.

I do know that there are different discounts for different concessions (benefits) normally tax credits/housing benefit/ council tax benefit is proof enough (well it was for me when I was 22).

I had friends that didn't have to pay for their course because their parents receievd the benefits.

I do know that you can get your basic kit supplied and sometimes part of the uniform.

Really you to need to contact the college

Hi, I work in a college in Essex.
From what I have learnt working in the Admissions process, colleges will not take students under the age of 16, as they are still of school age. The only time when 15 year olds would be accepted onto an NVQ1 hairdressing course is on a school link programme of alternative education.

After school leaving age has been reached, students are entitled to free programmes up until the age of 19. In regards to equipment, if you are on some form of benefits then you may be entitled to help from the Learner Support Fund (not sure if this applies everywhere) and also if full time, EMA, which is up to £30 per week.

    Hope this helps!

Why not think about where your passion lays instead of thinking which may be easier. I did both many moons ago and they are different so you should decide which path you choose by the passion you hold for the subject.

The course I did was a two year hairdressing and beauty therapy course, so it was combined. The kits can be expensive but you will have them for years....I qualified in1989 and still have bits of mine :D well, maybe that's because I went on to become a social worker!!!!!!
