Cost of house clearance and deep clean

Just come back from the family home of which I'm joint owner with my mother. She has moved out and has left the house looking like the horror house from Life of Grime. It's a long story but I've been left with a house to clear. It's a big 5 bed house, and it's filthy and full. Anyone hot any idea how much a clearance co would charge to clear the place out, and how much a deep clean would be? My other alternative is me and husband and a skip for all of next week. Any advice appreciated. Ta

Depends if there is anything of any value in there at all.

We used a company called Rugby Auctions to clear my Mums house after she died. They took absolutely everything, gave us a price for what they expected to make at auction for the decent bits and knocked off their costs so that we came away with the difference. We didn't make much but it was worth it to have the place cleared in a day.

They will go nationwide - we were in Cambridgeshire at the time.

You would still need to get a cleaning company in though.

Skips are an expensive option. the guys with trucks and a couple of burly lads that take it straight to the tip are often more cost effective, and quicker.

Putting stuff on ebay is ok if you have the storage capacity and the time.

Probaly the cheapest way would be to hire a van for the day or perhaps a friend have a trailer and take it all to the dump... ...if you have 6 yard skip in this area its £160.00 per skip :eek:and that include £30 for a permit if the skip has to stand on public road....

And you dont get much in a 6 yarder....I know that from experience ........and youve got a 5 bed house to clear out ....sounds expensive to me ....

Round here you can't simply hire a van and go to the tip they won't let you in without a permit - so find that out before you hire otherwise full van and nowhere to dump it!!! permits take about a month!!!!!!!!! and cost !! after all it may be trade refuse you are taking in!!!
Free cycle you'd be amazed at what people are looking for bits of wood and broken appliances to do allsorts with . or pt it out in the garden whilst you clear with a large sign saying please feel free to take.

Round where I live recently a van has been around collecting metal for scrap.

Might be worth looking if there is anything similar round you if there is a washer etc. to get rid of. Of course if it's working, then def freecycle.

How about a garden fire for some of the stuff (if appropriate for burning).

Is any of the stuff likely to be useable to anyone?
  • Thanks for the responses folks. Much appreciated. There is nothing of value in there, nothing to salvage it's literally bin bags full of rubbish (think Mr Trebus on Life of Grime). Mother has moved furniture out and just left a stinking mess piled up in every room. So nothing to sort out just need someone to come in, shovel it all out and rip the stinking carpets out. We initially thought of a 6 yard skip but you're right, after looking at what needs to go the skip wouldn't be big enough. Oh God, what a mess, why me? And how can anyone live like that?
  • Get a garden incinerator - it's like a dustbin with a chimney and makes the job a hell of a lot easier.

I think that's a great idea as I currently need to hack through god knows what to get into the garden, that needs clearing too
  • Cut the carpets into manageable pieces with a Stanley knife and use old tights to tie up the rolls.
