Tax Allowance for NHS workers who have to launder a uniform?

I have recently found out that most people who work for the NHS, who wear a uniform for work and launder it themselves at home, are entitled to a deduction in tax payments.

This was sort of confirmed by searching the HMRC website, where I found this document:

"EIM66795 - Tax treatment of National Health Service employees: expenses deductions: laundering uniforms: amount of deduction"

However, I can find no information anywhere about how a person goes about claiming this allowance. The "contact us" sections of the website are awfully confusing and do not seem to have any email capacity for a general enquiry.

I have worked for my NHS trust for 6 1/2 years, and have always worn a uniform, AND my profession is mentioned in the list on that document.

I first found this out by way of an advert from a "tax consultancy" firm, who would undertake the claim on my behalf, as long as I was happy to pay them 25% of any claim I received, plus some other fees for "cheque processing" and the like.
I would like to avoid this route and deal with HMRC directly myself if at all possible.

Does anyone have more information about how to go about claiming?
Can it be back dated for all the other years I have worked there?

Hope you can help!

Its been around a while now. don't use a company to do it for you, you can do it yourself with a letter. HMRC will just adjust your tax code.

As a note anyone who has to wash a work uniform can claim this tax deduction, its worth £60 a year so worth doing.

My partner works in a supermarket and he wrote a letter to the tax office and his tax code was changed to accommodate the laundering of his uniform.

You can also get an adjustment for union fees if you're a teacher don't know if you can for other professions. might be worth checking

Is it possible to claim this relief in retrospect? i.e. for the 8 years I wore a uniform, I didn't claim, can I claim now for those 8 years?
