Unblocking drain blocked with Hair!

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone has any good tips on how to unblock a drain from the shower that we think may be blocked with hair. Have tried Mr Muscle and it doesn't work so thought a traditional method may be better.

Thanks

Have you tried hooking it out with an old metal coat hanger ?
  • We have a very slow waste pipe out of our shower and get this all the time. I find that flushing it though with water and caustic soda is by far the most effective solution. You have to be very careful with it though as its really nasty stuff. Get any in your eye and your going to lose your sight so be very careful, use googles if you have some!

Edit: When cleared, make sure you tip some bleech down every now and then to keep it that way.

Soda crystals will clear it. They are sometimes called washing soda, or washing crystals and can be found either with the cleaners or the laundry products in supermarkets, and cost about 55p for a kilogram bag.

Put about half a teacupfull down the plug hole and leave it for a good few hours. It should be unblocked next time you use the shower. If it's really bad, you might need to repeat with another dose.
Here I go again on my own....

Where do you get caustic soda from?
  • I tip bicarbonate of soda down the plughole followed by white vinegar and then leave it for a good while. If you can leave it for a couple of hours it's best. Then pour boiling water down the plughole to finish.

Then get one of those cheap hair traps to catch the hair in future.

Father in law! He's got a tub full that we pinch when needed. ;)

I think you should be able to get some from hardware stores or even places like B&Q. But as I say, be very careful with it and follow the instructions. Dont be tempted to add it to hot water to help it along either, you'll find that your cold water heats up quite a bit when you've added it.

  • Use a plunger, about £6 from focus diy stores. It really works, no chemicals! :T
