What kind of things generally sell well on ebay?

Hi all,

I'm quite new to ebay and have recently started listing a few bits and pieces on there to declutter a bit. Most have sold for a few pounds, with a two or three things going over £10.

Might be a bit of a general question to answer but I was wondering what people find sells well, gets lots of watchers etc. An unused Phase Eight scarf I listed sold well, as did some discontinued foreign currency and a ceramic miniature decanter, probably to collectors. None of my clothes or handbags have sold, probably because I don't have designer labelled stuff!

What do you notice seems to sell well?

Thanks in advance!

    Used pants and socks.

Personally I do a completed items search on anything I want to get rid of, to see if it's worth listing.

In fairness to a new ebay user i should point out that these used underwear is not allowed on ebay and will get your account suspended.

It is difficult to get answers to questions like this as if people have things that sell well (and they are currently listing them) then they will be loathe to tell you (and the thousands of readers of this board!) what they are because they don't want competition.

I think it is good advice to do a completed items serach on things you might want to sell. Have a look at sample listings for those that do sell and those that don't to work out how best to list your items.

Use free listing days to try out varying prices for your stuff until you find pricing that works and leads to profitable sales.

Generally I have learned to set a starting price at the level I am happy to accept so I don't have to faff around with the hassle and disappointment of posting out lots of 99p sales.
  • I keep reading about doing searches for stuff that has sold on eBay, but how do you do this and where? Hopefully not a really stupid question :o

Go into advanced search, type in the keywords as usual and then scroll down and click on the 'Completed listings' box. It will only show a maximum of the last 15 days' sales so is more useful for commonly available items.

Pure collectables (e.g. stamps and postcards and memorabilia) are very bad sellers at the moment; with a lot of memorabilia replica merchants moved in sometime about four or five years ago and things have never been the same - from a buyer's point of view at least - since then. Disposable income is in short supply so the stuff people don't need but collect anyway don't sell and consequently are not listed in huge numbers.

The best things to sell is anything that people use regularly - e.g. old DVDs, clothing in good shape, toys and so on rather than relying on people to buy things that are less essential.
