Home insurance ?

i have had a bill today for £23 for premium owed from when i cancelled a policy with argos on 10th july 2005.
THe tell me this is the bal owed after a recent audit, obviously it is a good while ago, i havent looked in loft yet for old bills and statements but think it takes the mick a bit.
I wouldnt have switched if there was an associated cost and this would amount to at least 2 months of my old contents ins from memory, but i cant prove either way .
if i do or dont find a settlement letter then - where do i stand with this one ?
Iam not sure, but feel lousy so wont be going in the loft for a few days yet

Hi bw1972,
You should get more help with this on the Insurance and Life Assurance board, so I'll move your thread over there.

Many insurers charge you both an admin fee and a number of months premium for cancelling before you have forfilled the 12 month contract you signed up for. It would appear that they failed to collect it at the time (or you cancelled the DD before they could) and so are now chasing for it - legally they have up to 6 years to chase so are well within their limits.
Obviously it depends on how far they want to take it, they could get a County Court Judgement against you for the debt, they could load you to the fraud registery for no intent to pay which means your bank and all future creditors would be told that you are a fraudster, may load you to the underwriters register as a voided policy for non-payment meaning getting future insurance would be difficult or alternatively they might just wipe the debt and blacklist you from getting insurance with them again. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

cheers.
I have looked into this, and i have some records - just.
The policy was a buildings policy when i moved last year, i planned to take with Argos but couldnt as Shared ownership house, so i phoned and cancelled it prior to start date - this was before i ever signed and returned the credit agreement.
I was sent a letter a week or so later chasing, which i also kept along with notes i made on it at time, i then went thru to premium credit and to cox brokers who told me to send a cancel to their admin dept which i did.
I then had 2 letters after this, which i also ended up replying to, the last on 25th July asking me to sign the credit agreement again, which i again replied to, after which i have had no more letters or contact for 16months.
I am told it covers a period of time 30-6 to 10-7 but that i cancelled on 26-7 But that i also phoned the day after the 1st letter i had from P Credit (querying the uncancelled status no doubt).
Problem is proving i cancelled in a timely manner which i know i did, the mix up seems more to be with Argos/PC and Cox all of which wanted to pass me onto each other and none seemingly resolving.
Oh well will try a letter cos the premium was 9£ a month in the 1st place.0
